Senator Newman: Ramsey County Attorney’s decision to not prosecute felonies arising from traffic stops is “disgraceful”

Senator Scott Newman (R-Hutchinson) today issued the following statement about Ramsey County Attorney John Choi’s announcement that he will not prosecute most felony crimes that are found during non-safety traffic stops.

“John Choi’s decision to not prosecute felonies arising during traffic stops is a disgraceful abdication of his responsibility as county attorney. His job is to prosecute those accused of criminal activity, not to decide which laws are worthy of being enforced. It’s a violation of his oath of office and his ethics as a member of the Minnesota Bar. The police cannot ignore criminal conduct or decide which laws to enforce, and neither can a county attorney. Choi should be ashamed – his new policy will put innocent Minnesotans at risk.”
