Senator Lucero statement on passage of bill allowing violent criminals to vote before completing their full sentence

Today Senate Democrats passed the first bill on their public safety agenda, a bill giving convicted felons on probation the right to vote no matter their crime.

“It’s stunning how reckless Democrats are operating at the Capitol by passing legislation that permits violent sex offenders and other dangerous criminals the same right to vote as those of law-abiding citizens,” Sen. Eric Lucero (R-St. Michael) said. “It’s simple: if one breaks the law, one must pay the consequences. The consequence of committing a felony is forfeiting one’s voting rights until one has repaid one’s debt to society. Probation is an important part of a criminal’s sentence, and it should not be carelessly cast aside. This is common sense for most of us, but not for the extreme Democrats who are running our government.”
