Senate Republican efforts lead to more good news for Minnesota: Affordable, accessible insulin now available from Blue Cross Blue Shield

Today Blue Cross Blue Shield Minnesota announced $0 cost insulin for fully insured members in their individual, small, and large group policies. The change is made possible through reforms from the Republican-led Senate to stabilize the insurance market.

“Minnesota has always led the way to solving healthcare problems,” said Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka (R- Nisswa). “From non-profit HMO’s, world-class care at the Mayo Clinic, to stabilizing the market through reinsurance, we’re leading the nation in innovative healthcare options for our citizens. The calls to lower the cost of insulin for diabetics have been heard by many in the legislature and the healthcare industry, and we’re all responding to what the market wants: affordable, accessible insulin for diabetics.”

The move is just the latest in several changes from other insurance companies to address the increased cost of insulin from manufacturers. On August 6thMedica announced a $25 co-pay for insulin cost for their members. It was followed by a similar announcement by UCare
