Senate Democrats once again block elimination of tax on social security

Today on a party line vote, Senate Democrats once again blocked a bill that would eliminate the income tax on Social Security benefits. This year Senate Republicans have attempted twice to bring forward legislation that was part of an agreed-upon tax bill from 2022. Democrats have blocked both attempts.

“We are one of a handful of states that still imposes a tax on social security income, and last year, there was a good faith bipartisan effort to end that outdated tax,” said Senator Karin Housley (R-Stillwater). “Senate Republicans and Democrats both promised their constituents that we would come back and eliminate the tax, but so far, only Republicans have shown any interest in making good on that promise. As Senate Democrats continue to dismiss this bill, they are sending a message to our seniors that Minnesota is no longer a desirable place for retirement.”
