Senate Democrats Force Through Divisive Abortion Bill

Today, after over 12 hours of debate on the topic, Senate Democrats passed extreme abortion legislation that protects “abortion” and “reproductive rights” with no safeguards or limitations. The bill is just over one page long and goes far beyond the scope of both Doe v. Gomez and Roe v. Wade

Senator Karin Housley (R-Stillwater) released the following statement in response:

“I’m disappointed that today’s bill offered no protection for some of the most vulnerable people in our state. Senate Republicans spent hours offering common sense amendments, but all were struck down by Democrats that were unfortunately unwilling to meet us in the middle. What we’re left with is a one-sided bill. Minnesotans expect us to come together on these issues and work in a bipartisan way that reflects the values of our state. More importantly, they expect us to protect those that cannot protect themselves. I’m disappointed we weren’t able to meet those expectations today.”

Senate Republicans offered a number of critical amendments—all of which were struck down on party-line votes, and many of which were not deemed worthy of discussion by the majority party. Key amendments that were offered include:

  • Ban on third trimester abortions
  • Requirement of parental notification
  • Language that would have prevented the sterilization of minors
  • Ban on Mobile Abortion Vans
  • Prohibition of abortions due to down syndrome
  • Prohibition of Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) abortions
