Senate approves additional emergency coronavirus funding; temporarily suspends legislative activities

The Minnesota Senate on Monday night passed additional emergency funding of $200 million for hospitals, nursing homes, and other medical professionals on the front lines to combat the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

“This second phase of emergency coronavirus funding will help make sure that hospitals and long-term care facilities have the resources they need to continue protecting Minnesotans,” said Sen. Jeremy Miller (R-Winona).

Last week, the legislature unanimously approved $21 million for emergency funding to combat COVID-19. The emergency funds will allow the Minnesota Department of Health, in collaboration with state and federal officials, to support disease investigation, monitor potential cluster outbreaks, provide information to the public, coordinate statewide response activities, and conduct laboratory analysis.

Leaders of the Minnesota Legislature have also announced that beginning Tuesday, March 17, the House and Senate will temporarily suspend legislative floor sessions and committee hearings until March 26 in order to protect the public and limit the public spread of COVID-19.

“The Minnesota legislature is temporarily suspending floor sessions and committee hearings as a precautionary measure to help protect the health and well-being of our constituents and staff. As always, I will be available to communicate with constituents via email or telephone,” added Sen. Miller. “I will continue working and will remain fully engaged on the issues facing Minnesotans as we work together through this unique and uncertain time. And if volunteer needs arise in the district, please reach out to me as I will be available on a volunteer basis to help assist. Residents of Fillmore, Houston, and Winona Counties should continue to contact me as usual. We are all in this together and it’s going to take some time, but we will persevere.”

Constituents who have questions, feedback, or ideas should still direct them to Sen. Miller at 651-296-5649 or Sen.Jeremy.Miller@senate.mn.
