Legislative update from Senator Anderson

Friends and Neighbors,

As session quickly approaches, we are almost through the list of last session’s accomplishments!

Judiciary and Public Safety

I serve on the Judiciary and Public Safety Finance and Policy committee. One of the core functions of government is keeping the public safe and that was the priority of this year’s budget. It funded the Department of Corrections, the Judicial branch, and criminal divisions of the Department of Public Safety. The bill also included $9.5 million in new funding for corrections officers and security upgrades at state prisons and correctional facilities.

This budget also provided funding to toughen penalties for sex offenders:

  • The bill increased sentencing for those who produce or sell child pornography. This will particularly affect repeat offenders or anyone who exploits a minor under the age of 13.
  • Additional funding supports the repeal of the marital rape defense. This antiquated law limited individuals from prosecuting their spouse for sexual assault.
  • New language clarifies that despite consent, a police officer may not engage in sexual conduct of any kind with anyone in their custody.

Prioritizing public safety remains a primary focus. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve on such an important committee and look forward to next year’s work.

Funding State Government

The State Government budget funded constitutional offices and secured funding for election security. We focused on reducing state government spending. We want to make sure your tax dollars are being used efficiently and as we continue to work toward that goal, we are holding state agencies accountable for less waste and improved efficiency. Rather than increasing their funding, we are asking them to spend more judiciously and cut back on wasteful and irresponsible spending. Over interim, we have focused on the Department of Human Services in particular. We are asking for accountability from their department and expect serious reform. We will keep working to reduce government spending so you can keep more of your hard-earned money.

Supporting our Veterans

As chair of the Veterans committee, I am committed to honoring our veterans and their families. This year, we passed bills to improve support and opportunities for veterans, and funded initiatives to honor their service and sacrifice. Here are a few of the bills I authored this session:

  • We fully funded the Military and Veterans Affairs budget
  • Funded an expansion of the Veterans Service Center in the MSP airport. It serves as a space for servicemembers, veterans, and their families to step away from the busyness of the airport and enjoy a few extra amenities while they wait for their flight.
  • Designated June 30th as American Allies Day to honor those who fought on behalf of and alongside our armed forces
  • A Medal of Honor Commemorative Memorial will be located on the State Capitol Mall to recognize all who have displayed tremendous courage defending our country
