Howe shares concerns with Mitchell and a DFL failure to expedite ethics complaint, calls on Mitchell to resign

On Wednesday, Senate Republicans filed an ethics complaint against Senator Nicole Mitchell (D-Woodbury) for her arrest and subsequent charge of first-degree burglary that took place on Monday, April 22. Senate Democrats failed to call for her resignation or remove her from her committee positions.

Senator Jeff Howe (R-Rockville) released the following statement in response:

“I find these recent events concerning and disappointing. This is a felony and the Democrats’ lack of action raises serious questions about the integrity of our legislative body. Public servants should always be held to the highest standard of conduct and ethics, and Sen. Mitchell’s actions are in direct contradiction to those values. Her actions betray the integrity and accountability that the Senate strives to uphold.

We cannot afford to have individuals in positions of authority who take an oath to uphold the constitution and laws of this state and then fail to do so. It is imperative that we hold ourselves to the same standards that we expect of others. In light of these events, I urge Senator Mitchell to reflect on her actions and consider the implications they have on her ability to serve as an effective legislator. I believe that Sen. Mitchell should resign from office to maintain the integrity of our legislative process and ensure that those who hold public office are held accountable for their actions.

The people of Minnesota deserve representatives who uphold the highest standards of ethics and integrity. I will continue to advocate for transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership in our state government.

I ask that everyone please keep Senator Mitchell in your prayers, that she may resolve her issues with her family and find peace outside of the legislature.”
