Howe continues effort to update window tinting laws, improving accessibility for those with permanent prescriptions

Senator Jeff Howe (R-Rockville) last year authored a bill updating statute to exempt individuals with permanent window tint prescriptions from the burdensome requirement of renewing them every two years. The bill passed the Senate with unanimous support. This year’s legislation builds on that effort by clarifying who can write prescriptions for medically necessary window tinting.

“This bill is not expanding the law – it’s clarifying it,” said Howe. “There has been some confusion about who can issue prescriptions, and this legislation makes clear that optometrists are explicitly authorized. This is especially important for individuals with head injuries or vision problems.”

“Many patients face long wait times and costly appointments,” continued Howe. “By clarifying the law, we remove unnecessary barriers and ensure that anyone who needs medically necessary window tinting can get it quickly and with minimal disruption to their daily lives.”

The bill passed in the Transportation Committee and now heads to the senate floor.
