Gruenhagen: Democrats turn massive surplus into massive deficit

Friends and neighbors –

Bad news from Minnesota’s budget office. This morning, they released their annual November economic forecast. This is the report that details the state’s budget picture, and it plays a vital role for legislators to make decisions about how best to use taxpayer dollars.

The report projected a surplus of $2.4 billion for the 2024-2025 budget cycle. However, what is most alarming is that a $2.31 billion deficit is looming on the horizon because state spending is expected to grow faster than tax collections.

In other words, we are beginning to get a clear view of the dire consequences of one-party Democrat control. In one session, they turned a $19 billion surplus into a $2.31 billion deficit. They spent the entire surplus, despite promises to give it back. They grew the size of government by a mind-blowing 40%. And they raised almost $10 billion in taxes. Republicans tried to warn them about what would happen, but they did not listen. It was reckless and irresponsible.

You should be outraged by the fiscally reckless path that Democrats put us on. After one session of Democrat control of government, I am not sure Minnesotans could ever trust Democrats to be responsible with their tax dollars again.
