Goggin weekly update: standing up for farmers, simple MA work requirements

Neighbors,

Here’s what’s going on at the capitol this week. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Sincerely,

Mike

Standing up for Minnesota farmers

I will always stand up for workers of Minnesota, especially farmers.

During Jobs Committee this week, we heard a bill that would grant special employment privileges to minor league baseball teams. When I moved to amend that bill to allow farmers the same flexibility with their seasonal workers, I was accused of playing politics.

Yes, the accusation fired me up, because it is a cynical way to view the world. We need to do all we can to level the playing field and make sure the farmers and workers can earn a good living; that’s what this is about. In this case, if it’s good for the St. Paul Saints, it should be good for Minnesota’s farm economies too.

Giving students information about careers in the armed forces

This week the Senate Education Policy Committee heard Senate File 2795, which is my bill that would require school counselors to present students with information about careers in the armed forces. Students should be given complete information when trying to decide what path to take with their lives.

Requiring recipients of Medical Assistance to work

This week Senate Republicans introduced a new plan requiring able-bodied recipients of Medical Assistance to spend part of their weeks working, looking for work, or engaging in community service. Our bill makes exceptions for certain circumstances, such as people with medical conditions, those working through recovery from addiction, and sole custodians of young children. But right now, almost 20 percent of Minnesota’s entire population (1.1 million people) collect Medical Assistance. With the education and job training programs included in this bill, we can help more people build their self-esteem, take pride in their work, and achieve their full potential.
