Senator Zach Duckworth (R–Lakeville) urged federal officials to cooperate with state authorities in the investigation of the fatal shooting of Minneapolis resident Alex Pretti by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers during Operation Metro Surge in a letter dated January 26, 2026.
“At this moment, it’s critical that local, state, and federal officials work collaboratively to instill public trust and confidence in their conduct,” said Sen. Duckworth. “They should partner on investigations, stay grounded in facts, exercise restraint, and ensure transparency to best serve the public.”
The letter also urged caution in labeling Pretti a "domestic terrorist," noting that the term has a specific statutory definition under federal law. Duckworth affirmed his support for the lawful enforcement of federal immigration laws while calling for continuous refinement of tactics, training, and oversight to ensure that operations are conducted safely, proportionately, and in a manner consistent with the rule of law.
