Friends and neighbors,
The murders of former Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, and the attempted murder of Senator John Hoffman and his wife, have shocked and saddened all of us.
I served with Speaker Emerita Hortman in the House for over 15 years. She was a thoughtful and natural leader. As someone who always worked in opposition to her, I found her tough but fair in all our interactions. Senator Hoffman and I have served together in the Senate for three years, and despite our differences, I have always been able to work with him. It might surprise some people that we have co-authored bills that have been important for southeastern Minnesota.
My prayers are with the families, Senator Hoffman, and his wife, Yvette, as they heal.
