Honoring Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman

By Senator Mark Koran

When I first met Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, what stood out to me immediately was her presence. Engaging, kind, and down-to-earth. Nearly a decade later, those same qualities remained just as strong. She was consistent in her values, firm in her principles, and unwavering in her kindness, even in the most divisive moments at the Capitol.

I’m heartbroken over the tragic loss of Speaker Hortman and her husband, Mark. My deepest condolences go out to their children, Colin and Sophie. I’m so sorry you have to endure this nightmare. Minnesota stands united in grief with you.

I’m also relieved that Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, received the emergency medical care they needed and survived the brutal attack. Senator Hoffman is a passionate public servant who works tirelessly for what he believes in, and I wish him and his wife a full and steady recovery.

What we learned this weekend is that Minnesota is not immune to violence or to the consequences of hate. I’m incredibly grateful to the local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies who coordinated an exhaustive and high-risk manhunt. Their professionalism, skill, and dedication led to the safe apprehension of the suspect. While justice doesn’t erase the pain, it’s a necessary step toward healing.

Violence and violent rhetoric have no place in our state. They threaten our democracy and tear at the social fabric that allows us to debate vigorously and disagree respectfully. In moments like this, we are reminded that civility is not optional, it’s essential.

This is a pivotal moment for Minnesota. Let’s meet it with respect, compassion, and the courage to listen—just as Speaker Hortman so often did.
