Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman was the kind of servant leader who made the Minnesota Legislature a better place. She led with conviction and principle, but even in the most divisive moments at the Capitol, she embodied true “Minnesota nice.”
I’m devastated by the tragic loss of Speaker Hortman and her husband, Mark. My deepest condolences go out to their children, Colin and Sophie. No child should have to endure something like this.
My heart is also with Senator Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who were both shot in the same targeted attack. I have deep respect for Senator Hoffman’s work and the kind of person he is.
I’m grateful to law enforcement at all levels who worked through a complex and dangerous manhunt to bring the suspect into custody. Their tireless efforts brought a measure of justice to a grieving state.
This kind of violence has no place in Minnesota. We are passionate, but respectful. We care deeply, but we lead with decency. We must reject violence in all its forms.
Speaker Hortman was someone who treated others with dignity and respect. That will be her legacy. Not just what she did, but how she did it.
Thank you, Speaker Hortman, for your service and your example. Minnesota is better because of you.
