On Thursday, March 21, Senator Torrey Westrom (R-Alexandria) made a motion on the Senate floor to immediately bring up for a vote a bill that would give Minnesotans a voice on the new state flag and seal. SF 4771, authored by Sen. Westrom, would allow Minnesotans to approve the designs selected by the Minnesota State Emblems Redesign Commission.

Sen. Westrom released the following statement on SF 4771:

“This session, I authored legislation to let the people of Minnesota approve the changing of our state flag and seal. My bill would allow for a referendum on the 2024 ballot to give voters a say on the redesign of Minnesota’s state emblems.

“With the new state flag set to fly on May 11, Minnesota Statehood Day, I urged members to bring this legislation up immediately for a vote on the Senate floor. Unfortunately, Democrats voted against providing Minnesotans a say on the new state flag.

“Republicans will continue to do all we can to try and save our beautiful and historic flag, and I encourage you to continue to make your voice heard. We have a responsibility to take action so that the citizens can have input on this crucial change.”
