Senator Osmek, Senate approve additional emergency coronavirus funding; enter recess to protect public from COVID spread

On Monday night the Minnesota Senate passed additional emergency funding for hospitals, nursing homes, and other medical professionals on the front lines to combat the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.

“Ensuring the health and safety of the Minnesotans is one of the legislature’s top responsibilities,” said Senator David Osmek (R-Mound). “While the COVID-19 spread continues to escalate, it is important we state on top of it and ensure that our health professionals and local communities are fully prepared. Today, I joined my colleagues in the Senate to support an additional bipartisan emergency funding bill to help our Minnesota respond to this disease.”

Last week, the legislature unanimously approved $21 million for emergency funding to combat COVID-19. The emergency funds will allow the Minnesota Department of Health, in collaboration with state and federal officials, to support disease investigation, monitor potential cluster outbreaks, provide information to the public, coordinate statewide response activities, and conduct laboratory analysis.

Leaders of the Minnesota Legislature have also announced that beginning Tuesday, March 17, the House and Senate will alter their operations and suspend all legislative business until April 14 in order to protect the public and limit the public spread of COVID-19.

“Two weeks ago, Minnesota was in a very different position then it is now, and with that in mind, we are trying to prepare for where our state could be in another week or two,” said Senator David Osmek (R-Mound).  “While I am personally susceptible to lung illnesses, and I will be taking measures to prevent exposure or further spread of the virus, it is important for Minnesota’s government not to shut down.  My staff and I will work remotely as much as possible.  If there is a problem with MnSure enrollment or government agencies, I will continue to serve my constituents as I have over the past seven years.”
