Senator Nelson and Minnesota Senate continue commitment to protecting Minnesotans

The Minnesota Senate on Monday passed emergency funding for state troopers as they work to protect Minnesotans from potential civil unrest. The funding was a request by Governor Walz. The bill, S.F. 2441, secures $2.75 million for the law enforcement response to civil unrest through the Interstate Emergency Management Assistance Compact and $6.3 million for Minnesota State Trooper expenses related to the unrest and Chauvin trial.

“We ask a lot of our law enforcement officers,” said Sen. Carla Nelson (R-Rochester). “These are difficult, heartbreaking times, and public safety is a paramount concern. I am proud to support this emergency funding request from Gov. Walz to make sure our brave police and state patrol officers have the resources they need to keep us safe.”

Earlier this session, the Senate passed funding for the Law Enforcement Operations Account (LEO), to keep Minnesotans safe by securing resources for emergency law enforcement operations. However, there was no action from the House.

The bill now goes to the House for consideration.
