Senator Kiffmeyer legislative update for June 13: Education funding

Education Funding

The interim has begun, and as I review all that we accomplished last session, I thought I would report on the work we did to fund our schools. This year, we made an historic investment in E-12. Each school district will receive 2-percent increases in both 2020 and 2021, adding up to $388.8 million altogether. Below is the break-down for each district:

  • St. Michael-Albertville
    • 2020
      • $914,799 and $140/pupil increase
    • 2021
      • $1.8 million and $283/pupil increase
  • Elk River
    • 2020
      • $1.9 million and $140/pupil increase
    • 2021
      • $3.8 million and $284/pupil increase
  • Big Lake
    • 2020
      • $428,206 and $143/pupil increase
    • 2021
      • $863,026 and $289/pupil increase

We also increased special education funding this year. School districts are responsible for providing additional resources and services that the federal government has mandated and we appropriated extra funds to ensure that all our students receive excellent educational experiences.

  • St. Michael-Albertville
    • 2020
      • $99,543 and $15/pupil increase
    • 2021
      • $287,505 and $44/pupil increase
  • Elk River
    • 2020
      • $403,515 and $30/pupil increase
    • 2021
      • $1.26 million and $76/pupil increase
  • Big Lake
    • 2020
      • $134,172 and $45/pupil increase
    • 2021
      • $356,304 and $119/pupil increase

I am confident that each of our school districts will greatly benefit from these increases. We are thankful for the amazing teachers and faculty we have in our schools and we are committed to providing them with the tools they need to help students succeed.
