Senator Johnson Encourages Students to Participate in New Senate Art Program

Greetings from the Capitol!

The Minnesota Senate is implementing a new art program for K-12 students throughout Minnesota. We are inviting students to submit a drawing or a photograph of life in their district. One drawing or photograph per Senate District will be chosen and will hang in the Minnesota Senate Building for the following calendar year. This will be an annual program, so we’re looking forward to many great entries in the years to come!

A few logistical details:

  • Students must be enrolled in K-12 for the current school year (or the one about to start).
  • Students may submit one drawing or photograph through October 31, 2021.
    • Students can either submit their drawing/photo via email or can mail it in. Addresses are listed on the following page for both options.
  • I will go through all the submissions and choose the one I think best represents our district.
  • Minnesota Senate staff will reach out to the student to inform them their submission has been chosen and to arrange for proper formatting as needed.

Guidelines

  • Students must be enrolled in K-12 for the current school year (or the one about to start).
  • Students may submit one drawing or photograph through October 31, 2021.
  • The chosen submission will be hung in the Minnesota Senate Building for the following calendar year.
  • Students should include their first and last name, their grade, their school, and their Senate District number. Should their photo or drawing be chosen, Minnesota Senate staff will reach out to the school to confirm the chosen entry as well as to facilitate any further requirements.
    • At this time, a letter for the student will be sent to the school, congratulating them on their entry being chosen. We ask that the school deliver the letter to the student, rather than include personal information, such as home addresses.

Specifics

  • Drawings and photographs cannot display any identifiable people.
  • The subject of the entry must be non-partisan in nature. (No campaign images, no themes that clearly demonstrate preference on a political topic.)
  • Drawings should be limited to an 8×10 piece of paper.
    • Because they will go in a frame, any medium must be flat on the paper (pencils, charcoal, markers, etc.).
  • Photographs will be resized through the Minnesota Senate. The higher the resolution, the better the resulting photo will be.

Due to the volume of anticipated entries, please do not reach out to your Senator to ask about the results or to encourage a specific submission. Emailed submissions will receive a response verifying they have been received.
