Senator Housley’s Crucial “Wedding Barn Bill” included in final Jobs Budget Bill

Today with broad bipartisan support, the Minnesota Senate passed the Jobs and Economic Growth budget bill, which prioritizes business and economic recovery for all of Minnesota. Included in the bill is legislation authored by Senator Karin Housley (R-Stillwater) that clarifies state building and fire code requirements for smaller venues, specifically Rural Event Venues.

In recent years, there has been a movement of entrepreneurs that are renovating and restoring historic barns to be used as small event venues for weddings and community events. On average, these venues attract between 8,000 and 20,000 visitors to their communities and can provide an economic impact of over $3 million per year for local communities.

Venues have received mixed messages from state and local agencies regarding building and fire code interpretation for Rural Event Venue structures. These Venues have already been licensed and inspected by local authorities to institute safety measures that fit their unique structures. When enacted, this bill will specify that the installation of an automatic fire sprinkler system is only required in buildings constructed/added to on or after August 1, 2008, with an occupant load of 300 or more.

“This is a simple bill with a big effect, and I’m glad to see this language included in the final Jobs budget bill,” said Sen. Housley. “These businesses are a vibrant addition to our communities, and most of the barns are family-run and provide unique settings for weddings and other small community-based events. These venues have always been committed to safety and providing a top-level experience, and this language ensures that they’re able to continue operating safely with their unique structures.”

This bill previously passed in the Senate but did not receive a vote in the House. The language is now included in the Jobs budget, which will go to the House for a vote before heading to the Governor for a final signature.
