Senator Holmstrom Capitol Update May 8, 2026

Friends and neighbors,

Earlier this week, Senate Democrats decided to pass an all-out attack on the Constitution in the form of a bill that bans Second Amendment rights.

During the floor debate, I stood up and said that I would not comply with their unconstitutional law. This upset them. They’re now out on social media and in the newspapers running attacks against Republicans.

But the truth is, they are the aggressors. The rights enumerated in the constitution are inherent and not derived from the government. The People have not provided the legislature the power to strip away these these rights. Any attempt to do so amounts to nothing more than a tyrannical power grab.

I wanted to correct the record and make sure that you know there are people down here who will fight for your rights-no matter what they throw at us, no matter the slander, the smears, or the outright attacks.

As many of you know, school safety funding was one of my top priorities coming into session. This bill contains additional provisions that would prevent school safety funding from being included in the bill. At the same time, Senate Democrats voted to cut per pupil funding to $21, they allocated $199,000 to fund security for politicians. Unconscionable.

I have your back, and the Republican caucus has your back.

National Day of Prayer – May 7, 2026
National Day of Prayer was on Thursday, and we had a special event here at the Capitol. Thanks to everyone who came to St. Paul to reflect on God’s grace, give thanks, and pray for our state and nation. God bless Minnesota and God bless the USA!

Senate Democrats betrayed the Constitution and rammed through an assault on the Second Amendment.

They packaged school safety funding with an unconstitutional gun grab because they don’t actually care about keeping kids safe. This was a political bill to strip our God-given rights to self-defense.

We won’t forget this betrayal of our rights.
