Senate extends previously scheduled Easter Recess to protect public from COVID spread

On Sunday evening, the Minnesota Senate majority reached an agreement with leaders in the legislature to extend the regularly scheduled legislative Spring break for an additional three weeks to contribute to efforts to flatten the curve of the spread of COVID-19. Beginning Tuesday, March 17, the House and Senate will alter their operations and senate chamber sessions are suspended until April 14.

“During this exceptional time, we are taking temporary measures to protect the public while continuing our work,” said Senator Mary Kiffmeyer (R-Big Lake). “It is vital that we suspend large meetings at the Capitol and in our individual legislative offices for the health of the public. We will encourage teleworking and Facetime appointments, so we are ready to resume business as usual when this passes. Constituent services and maintaining my availability to you remain my top priorities. Please continue to contact me as usual, I remain ready to serve you.”

Senators and staff will be available to work and meet with constituents in accordance with recommendations from the Center for Disease Control. The Capitol and Senate office building will generally be closed to the public, but meetings will still take place by appointment. Upon their return, the Senate will resume important business before the constitutional adjournment date of May 18, 2020.

Constituents who have concerns or questions are encouraged to direct them to Senator Kiffmeyer’s office at 651-296-5655 or sen.mary.kiffmeyer@senate.mn.
