Senate approves additional coronavirus funding; extends previously scheduled Easter Recess to protect public from COVID spread

Legislative leaders are working together today to determine funding that will sufficiently prepare hospitals to care for Minnesotans during this unprecedented time. On the advice of experts, legislators will pass the supplementary support off the floor this evening.

The Senate moved quickly last week to pass emergency funding for combatting COVID-19. Senate File 3813 appropriates $20.899 million to the Public Health Response Emergency Account. The emergency funds have allowed the Minnesota Department of Health, in collaboration with state and federal officials, to support disease investigation, monitor potential cluster outbreaks, provide information to the public, coordinate statewide response activities, and conduct laboratory analysis.

On Sunday evening, the Minnesota Senate majority reached an agreement with leaders in the legislature to extend the regularly scheduled legislative Spring break for an additional three weeks to contribute to efforts to flatten the curve of the spread of COVID-19. Beginning Tuesday, March 17, the House and Senate will alter their operations and suspend legislative business until April 14.

“Our legislative action will provide hospitals and the healthcare industry with the support and funding they need to keep Minnesotans safe at this time,” said Senator Carrie Ruud (R-Breezy Point). “We will be ready to respond if the need arises. I remain available to you and I hope you will continue to reach out to me with your questions and concerns.”

Senators and staff will be available to work and meet with constituents in accordance with recommendations from the Center for Disease Control. The Capitol and Senate office building will generally be closed to the public, but meetings will still take place by appointment. Upon their return, the Senate will resume conducting important business before our constitutional adjournment date of May 18, 2020.

Constituents who have concerns or questions can still direct them to Senator Ruud’s office at 651-296-4913 or sen.carrie.ruud@senate.mn.
