Sen. Westrom: In state budget, grow paychecks not taxes

Senator Torrey Westrom (R-Elbow Lake) issued the following statement after Governor Tim Walz’s Department of Revenue released a report revealing the State of Minnesota collected $489 million more than projected from taxpayers in the month of April alone, a 17.1% increase over the original forecast. Since the beginning of the 2019 fiscal year, the state has taken in a total of $573 million more in taxpayer funds than initially projected.

“This report from the Department of Revenue shows that our state economy is humming along,” said Senator Westrom. “With a strong climate for job creators, now is not the time to grind things to a halt with onerous tax increases on every day Minnesotans. Due to revenues increasing this year, in addition to a billion-dollar surplus from the last two-year budget cycle, we do not need to raise taxes to fund the priorities of Minnesotans. I will continue to push for a balanced budget that prioritizes growing the bank accounts of hardworking Minnesota families, not the DFL-proposed over $3 billion tax increase package, including 20 cents more per gallon of gas.”
