Sen. Scott Jensen: With $1.5B surplus, MN can focus on lowering cost of health care

The Minnesota Management and Budget agency (MMB) announced on Thursday, December 6 that the State of Minnesota is projected to have a budget surplus of $1.544 billion. The state’s budget reserves, also known as the “rainy day fund”, total $2.075 billion, the highest level in Minnesota state history.

“The legislature’s previous budget delivered an increase in education funding, historic funding for roads and bridges, and tax relief for working families in Minnesota,” said Senator Scott Jensen, M.D. [R-Chaska]. “Due to prioritizing the needs of Minnesotans and fiscal restraint, our state’s budget reserves are at record levels and we have a $1.5 billion surplus. In 2019, I will support a budget that continues to hold the line on taxes in addition to addressing a major need of all Minnesotans: affordable health care.”

In March, MMB will release an updated forecast that the legislature will use for setting the state’s budget. A family practice physician, Senator Jensen has been a leading voice at the Capitol on health care issues.

“Health care access and affordability is my top priority,” added Senate Jensen. “Through health care price transparency and other innovative solutions, I am confident we can lessen the health insurance burden on Minnesota families.”
