Minnesota State Senator Carla Nelson (Rochester) today was appointed as the lead Republican on a new Senate subcommittee purported to examine the potential impact on Minnesota of decisions made at the federal level.
Senator Nelson issued the following statement about the new committee:
“I am honored to be appointed Republican Lead for this new committee. These are important issues and I take the responsibility very seriously.
“At the same time, we must be honest about where our greatest challenges are coming from: decisions made by leaders right here in Minnesota. When they had single party control of state government, Democrats in St. Paul spent away a record $18 billion surplus in a single session, raised taxes by $10 billion, and increased spending by 40%. It left Minnesota facing a projected $6 billion deficit on the horizon. They failed to set smart, responsible priorities and have failed time after time to put guardrails in place to stop waste and fraud. Those choices have strained our budget, raised costs for Minnesota families, and forced them to make cuts to critical needs and services for vulnerable Minnesotans.
“We can, and should, carefully monitor federal decisions, but we cannot lose sight of the very real and severe consequences from decisions made by the Democrats with single party control of government right here at home.”
