On Friday, Feb, 27, Minnesota Management and Budget (MMB) presented the state’s annual February budget forecast. It shows an initial surplus of $3.7 billion this budget cycle, with continued structural imbalances impacting the bottom line in the future.
Sen. Gene Dornink (R–Brownsdale) released the following statement:
"Minnesotans are careful with their budgets, yet our state government has failed to show the same responsibility. The latest budget forecast shows that while our national economy is strong, Minnesota’s is falling flat.
“Over 2023 and 2024, under one-party control, Governor Walz and Democratic leaders spent the entire $19 billion surplus and expanded government by nearly 40%. That surplus — like all surpluses, built on the hard work and success of Minnesota’s businesses, farmers, and working families — was quickly depleted. Democrats’ spending spree, combined with $10 billion in new taxes, has driven up costs for Minnesotans across the state.
“Now, we face a growing deficit driven by overspending and mismanagement. Minnesota faces serious challenges, but this session is an opportunity to restore fiscal discipline, strengthen accountability, and deliver results that matter most to families statewide."
