Red Wing businesses are being heard at the capitol

This week Red Wing businessman Bob Riegelman, the president of Riedell Shoes, had two opportunities to speak with policymakers in St. Paul.  The Senate Committee on Jobs and Economic Development held a hearing to give businesses across the state the opportunity to share how they can safely open during the COVID-19 pandemic. During the Senate hearing, Riegelman expressed frustration that some businesses could open because they were providing essential services but his could not, even though he was willing to provide the proper protections for employees and customers.

Today, Governor Walz held a press conference announcing that some businesses (industrial and office-based) could reopen with safety measures in place. Riegelman was in the spotlight again with a speaking opportunity during the press conference. He again shared a message that reflects the current reality for many in the business community.

“Bob’s testimony to the committee made such an impact, that he was again asked to speak at the Governor’s press conference today,” said State Senator Mike Goggin (R-Red Wing). “Bob’s story represents the experience of many Minnesota businesses trying to make it through this crisis. Small family businesses like Riedell Shoes are the heart of our communities and they deserve to have their voices heard right now.”

“We are working to provide support and grants to get businesses through this time, but for many, it still won’t be enough. I want to be prepared to help the Governor so the people of Minnesota can get back to work safely,” Senator Goggin added. “Bob and his family have been part of the Red Wing community for four generations, and I am doing everything I can to make sure their legacy, along with so many others, will continue to thrive in our state.”

The Department of Employment and Economic Development published a COVID-19 template for reopening. This guide can be used to complete preparedness plans for safe operation while also following all federal and state safety protocols (social distancing, curbside pick-up when available, limited occupants, etc.)

The Governor shared a new “Safely Returning to Work” resource following his press conference today.
