Jasinski bill would reimburse Deputy Registrars for costs incurred during MNLARS disaster

Deputy Registrars struggling with complications from the failed new licensing and registration system (MNLARS) will be reimbursed thanks to a bill authored by Senator John Jasinski (R-Faribault). Senate File 621 authorizes $10 million for Deputy Registrars, to be appropriated based on the number of transactions processed by each registrar. A similar measure was vetoed during last year’s supplemental budget bill.

“The MNLARS disaster has not just been painful for folks looking to get their tabs or transfer a vehicle title,” said Sen. Jasinski. “Deputy Registrars across the state were nearly driven out of business. I heard from so many of these private business owners who, through no fault of their own, were forced to dip into their 401K or their savings accounts just to squeeze by. The state put them in that impossible position, and the state has a responsibility to take care of them.”

The bill passed the Senate Transportation Committee on March 5 and was referred to the Finance Committee, where it awaits a hearing.
