Gruenhagen: Why you should stay engaged in your child’s education

Friends and neighbors –

It’s hard to believe, but summer is already at an end. I hope you had the chance to enjoy the sunny days and make lasting memories with your friends and families.

The new school year brings new beginnings for students all over Minnesota. Excitement (and let’s be honest, probably a little dread) is in the air as students and teachers head back to the classrooms again.

Education is so valuable in providing kids with the tools they need to succeed later in life, but it needs to be a team effort – parents must remain actively engaged in what their students are learning. Not only is parent involvement critical to student success, but parents need to be aware of the material being taught to their children. In most cases, that material is important and foundational. However, we have seen too many cases where that’s not the case. We need to be vigilant against distracting, controversial subjects being injected into classroom discussions.
