I have spoken out often against the Green New Deal and how destructive it is. I call it the Green New Scam, because that's exactly what it is.
Back in 2023, Democrats passed a law mandating that Minnesota move to 100% carbon-free electricity by 2040. They ignored all the problems that came along with this, including testimony from electric co-ops saying flat out that the technology doesn't exist to do that.
They passed it anyway. We are already seeing electricity rates climb, and 36% of Minnesotans either can't pay their electric bill or are barely keeping up. I've had elderly constituents in my insurance office tell me they're choosing between their electricity bill and their prescriptions. This is quickly turning into a crisis for a lot of people.
The Democrats' answer to the problem they created is a band-aid: tax subsidies. They drive your rates through the roof, then turn around and offer government handouts to help you pay. We've seen this playbook before. It is exactly what happened with Obamacare and health insurance premiums.
It’s only going to get worse. The Trump administration has already pulled $7 billion out of Minnesota, and if our electric co-ops can't hit the 2040 targets, they'll be forced to buy carbon credits. These are worthless pieces of paper that will cost them millions, and the costs will get passed straight to you on your bill.
There’s one way out of this. We need to get back to commonsense baseload electricity before this gets even more out of hand.
