Gruenhagen: The Green New Scam drives up energy bills

Friends and neighbors,

As you know, I sit on the Senate’s energy committee. Recently the committee heard a presentation about alternative energy, which gave me the opportunity to the skyrocketing cost of electricity and how it affects families, farms, and businesses in Minnesota.

It’s the so-called Green New Deal, or more accurately the Green New Scam. Democrats continue to pursue this radical climate change agenda, and it is pushing Minnesota down the wrong path.

You are paying the price. In fact, last session we learned that 36% of Minnesotans can't afford to pay their electric bills. Real families, real farmers, and real small businesses – all struggling because of choices Democrats made when they passed the Carbon Free 2040 law a couple years back.

Wind and solar cannot reliably provide the baseload power our grid needs to keep the lights on. During our recent cold snap, coal, natural gas, and nuclear were providing up to 88% of the electricity on our regional grid. Total demand was about 10% higher than similar cold snaps just a few years ago. When Minnesotans need power most, it’s traditional energy sources keeping things going. We can’t rely on wind and solar.

It’s also worth noting that many of the studies used to justify this agenda come from organizations with a track record of climate activism or that receive funding tied to promoting the very policies they're supposedly studying objectively. They are advocates with an agenda, not pure-of-heart scientists.
