Goggin’s ‘Move Over’ bill would promote safety for drivers of service vehicles

Drivers of service vehicles would enjoy safer working conditions with the expanded ‘Move Over’ bill authored by Sen. Mike Goggin (R-Red Wing), which was approved by the Senate Transportation Finance and Policy Committee on Tuesday. The bill would broaden the current ‘Move Over’ law, which requires motorists to move one full lane over from stopped service vehicles with their lights flashing.

“This bill benefits vulnerable workers just trying to do their jobs, and should be enacted as quickly as possible,’ said Senator Goggin.  ‘We need those who work in important public services to feel safe as they serve their communities.  This is a simple, straightforward fix that will protect both motorists and service vehicle drivers from easily avoidable crashes and injuries.”

Senator Goggin’s addition to the ‘Move Over’ legislation would put solid waste trucks, recycling trucks, and similar vehicles under the umbrella of the law. Additionally, it would encourage drivers to slow to a reasonable speed while passing said vehicles on roads with only one lane in a single direction.

Passage of the bill would be valuable as Minnesota enters summer traffic and construction season.

The Senate Transportation committee approved the bill on a voice vote and will soon be heard on the Senate Floor.
