Farnsworth votes to extend unemployment benefits for Iron Range Miners

Today the Minnesota Senate passed a Jobs and Labor bill that includes the extension of unemployment benefits for those impacted by the idling of mining operations on the Range. The language is based on an amendment carried by Senator Robert Farnsworth (R- Hibbing) during regular session.
“This was a top priority for me the moment we learned that two mines would temporarily halt operations,” Sen. Farnsworth said. “Our miners, their families, and the communities they live in deserve the assurance that we will be there for them. This isn’t just about making ends meet, it’s about keeping these skilled workers and their families close so they can easily return to work when the mines reopen. I’m glad we were able to get this bill passed and am confident it will make a difference.”
Following enactment, more than 600 workers will be eligible for an additional 26 weeks of unemployment. The bill is part of a special session to complete the legislative work to pass a balanced budget.
