The U.S. Supreme Court ruled today that states can ban transgender athletes from girls' and women's sports, upholding laws in Idaho and West Virginia in a 6-3 decision that touches more than two dozen states with similar bans on the books. The Court held that the laws do not violate either Title IX or the Constitution's equal protection guarantee. Minnesota still allows transgender athletes to compete in girls’ sports. Senator Robert Farnsworth (R-Hibbing) released the following statement in response:
"Today's Supreme Court ruling is a victory for both female athletes and for common sense, affirming that girls deserve fair competition in their own field. It upholds the integrity of women's sports, protects the physical safety of girls, and secures opportunities for the women and girls who train, sacrifice, and compete with a level playing field. Unfortunately, Minnesota families will not feel the benefits of this victory because proposals to protect girls' sports have repeatedly failed on strict party-line votes. Commonsense tells us that girls deserve their own teams and podiums where they can excel without unfair disadvantage. I will continue fighting to bring these essential protections to Minnesota because our girls deserve fairness above all else."
