Gruenhagen: The Climate Superfund Tax: What It Is and Why It's a Bad Deal for Minnesota

Friends and neighbors,

It didn’t get a ton of attention, but Democrats pushed a bill this session called the Climate Change Superfund Act. While we defeated it this year, Democrats will certainly be back with it again as soon as they are able.

The name they gave it leaves out a crucial word. It’s really a Climate Change Superfund Tax. The state would calculate how much damage it claims was caused by greenhouse gas emissions going all the way back to 1995, assign each energy company a share of the blame, and send them a bill. It's a backdoor tax increase (and a big one) that gets passed straight through to you, the ratepayer. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce estimates this policy could cost Minnesota households more than $7,000 per year, and that's on top of everything families are already paying for groceries, heating, and fuel. The increase in fuel costs associated with this tax increase will make the cost of everything more expensive.

I filmed a video breaking all of this down that I wanted to share with you, you can watch it here: https://youtube.com/shorts/kHgOpEKbacE

It is important to pay attention, because Democrats will bring this back next session. Thank you for staying involved, thank you for staying engaged, and please do not hesitate to reach out if there is anything I can help with.

God Bless,

Senator Glenn Gruenhagen
