Republicans negotiate tab fee tax cut for end of session deal

Legislative leaders and the Governor came to an agreement Wednesday evening to reduce tab fees, pass a bonding bill, implement fraud prevention measures, bail out Hennepin County Medical Center, and provide property tax rebates.

Republicans negotiated for tab fee rates to revert to 2022 levels for one year in exchange for passing a bonding bill, which requires Republican support to pass.

“This is an issue I have been hearing about all year long,” Sen. Robert Farnsworth (R-Hibbing) said. “Everyone was surprised the changes from 2023 sent their tab fees through the roof. And with costs going up, we needed to do something. A one-year reduction is a start, and I’ll continue next session to keep reducing the cost of government to Minnesotans.”

Additional agreements include $100 million in property tax rebates, mental health funding for students, and a $1.2 billion bonding bill for infrastructure needs. The legislature must pass all bills by midnight on Sunday, May 17.
