Senate Republicans deliver tab fee tax cut for Minnesotans

On Wednesday night, Senate Republicans announced they delivered a quarter of a billion-dollar tab fee tax cut for Minnesotans as part of end of session negotiations. In exchange for an infrastructure bill, along with commonsense fraud prevention reforms, tab fee rates will revert to the 2022 rate for one year, with a start date yet to be determined.

"Our goal this session was to put Minnesotans first by keeping life affordable and stopping the fraud,” Senate Republican Leader Mark Johnson (East Grand Forks) said. “Senate Republicans fought hard to address one of the top issues hitting Minnesotans: outrageous tab fees. I’m proud to announce that Minnesotans will get a tab fee tax cut for one year, putting a quarter of a billion dollars back in their wallets, without impacting transportation funding.

“We also agreed to passing bipartisan and commonsense fraud reforms and investing in Minnesota’s infrastructure needs with a bonding bill. When we put Minnesotans first and listen to their concerns, we can get things done for the better of everyone in our great state."

Additional agreements on supplemental budget items, property tax relief, and funding for Hennepin County Medical Center are not part of the Senate Republican agreement but were agreed to by other legislative leaders and expected to pass. The legislature must pass all bills by midnight on Sunday, May 17.
