Westrom urges the passage of the SAVE America Act

State Sen. Torrey Westrom (R-Alexandria) is urging the United States Senate to take immediate action on the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act. The legislation would require proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections.

Westrom recently led an effort to send a letter to President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader John Thune. He was joined by 73 Republican state senators and representatives who signed the letter. With the Senate now poised to take up the SAVE America Act (also known as the SAVE Act), Westrom is intensifying this call to action.

“Minnesotans want immediate action on the SAVE America Act,” said Westrom. “This measure has broad support among Americans who are calling for stronger election integrity and voter ID. President Trump is fighting for election integrity and urging passage of the SAVE America Act, and we stand behind his efforts. I am helping lead the charge to make Minnesota’s voice heard in Washington and push for action. Now is the time for the U.S. Senate to act and get this legislation across the finish line.”

The letter reads in part:

“The SAVE Act addresses a fundamental democratic principle: only eligible U.S. citizens should vote in our elections. By mandating verifiable proof of citizenship, it would strengthen electoral integrity, enhance public confidence, and help prevent fraud or any potential noncitizen participation through a uniform national standard.

“With the recently revealed, astounding fraud problems in Minnesota stemming from systemic failures and inadequate oversight, it is imperative that decisive governmental reforms such as the SAVE Act be enacted to protect the integrity of our elections, institutions, and to safeguard the citizens of our state and our country.”

Westrom continues his push and support for the Minnesota Legislature to adopt voter ID and similar laws to improve integrity and safeguards in state elections as well.
