On Monday, the Minnesota Senate Judiciary Committee advanced SF 473, a bill that would place a constitutional amendment on the November 2026 ballot. The bill would effectively enshrine unlimited abortion in the Minnesota Constitution and weaken Title IX protections for girls.
“The Declaration of Independence guarantees the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, chief among them being life,” said Senator Michael Holmstrom (R–Buffalo). “No serious scientific understanding can argue that a baby in the womb is not a human life. The bill as written is deceptive and will fabricate a constitutional right to abortion all the way up to birth. Minnesotans do not support unmitigated infanticide.”
Sen. Holmstrom offered an amendment to remove the abortion-related language, which was defeated on party lines. He also proposed an amendment to remove “gender identity” and “gender expression” from the bill, which was also voted down along party lines.
“Oppression of female voices and opportunities is at an all-time high,” said Sen. Holmstrom. “Our daughters deserve privacy. They deserve equal rights, opportunities, and our protection. Title IX was a hard-fought victory for our girls and now it’s under a full-blown Democrat assault. We owe our daughters protection.”
The bill passed the committee on a party-line vote.
