State Senator Carla Nelson (R-Rochester) returned to the Minnesota State Capitol on February 17 for the start of the 2026 legislative session, beginning what is expected to be a focused and closely watched year at the Capitol.
Since the end of the 2025 session, Sen. Nelson has been regularly attending district events and meeting with families, small business owners, seniors, educators, and community leaders throughout Dodge and Olmsted Counties. Many raised concerns about rampant fraud, Minnesota’s high cost of living, property taxes, housing affordability, and how to improve the efficiency, accountability, and transparency of state government.
“Public service begins with listening,” Sen. Nelson said. “Over and over, I am hearing from families who are feeling squeezed and from business owners working extra hard just to stay afloat. They no longer feel like they are the priority, and that is a problem. We need to put Minnesotans first again. These conversations with regular Minnesotans shape my work more than anything else.”
Starting on February 17, additional security screening will be required to enter the State Capitol and the Minnesota Senate Building. Visitors are encouraged to allow extra time when planning a trip to St. Paul.
“It is a privilege to represent Dodge and Olmsted Counties in the Senate,” Sen. Nelson said. “I encourage anyone with questions, concerns, or ideas to reach out. Hearing directly from you is the key to best serving our communities.”
Sen. Nelson is serving her fifth term and represents Senate District 24, which includes communities in Olmsted County and all of Dodge County. She serves on the Capital Investment Committee, the Jobs and Economic Development Committee, the Taxes Committee, and the Transportation Committee.
