Gruenhagen: 2026 Legislative Session kicks off

Friends and neighbors,

The 2026 legislative session began February 17. I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue representing you in the Minnesota Senate.

A small change to the committees I serve on: This year I’ll be switching from the Labor Committee to the Housing Committee, which comes at an important time as a lot of people are struggling with rising home prices, rents, and higher costs across the board. I

We will continue to resist the extremist agenda of Democrats in Minnesota in every area. The taxpayers of this state are still facing the consequences of one-party Democrat control from 2023 and 2024: they turned an $18 billion surplus into a projected $6 billion deficit, raised taxes $10 billion, imposed dozens of regulations and mandates on small businesses and schools, and increased spending by a reckless 40%. Everything is more expensive because of their work, and Minnesota remains one of the least tax friendly states in the country. Meanwhile, fraud is running rampant and they have refused to stop it.

Democrats like to pretend their agenda is about helping people, but instead it’s hurting the people who need our help the most. We can care deeply about people who need help while still insisting that taxpayer dollars are handled responsibly. Scripture teaches stewardship, and stewardship applies to government as well.

My priorities for this session are pretty simple: I will support stronger oversight and tougher penalties for fraud, better verification standards, and accountability for the people who allowed fraud to happen. I will support more responsible budgets and reining in unsustainable spending. I will also push for tax relief for working families and seniors, and for rolling back mandates that drive up energy and housing costs.

One final thing to be aware of: This year, visitors to the Capitol and Senate Building will go through additional security screening. There will be screeners set up around both buildings. Please plan accordingly if you intend to visit.

As always, thank you for staying involved and engaged. If you have any questions or feedback, I would love to hear it. Please reach out any time.

God Bless,

Senator Gruenhagen
