Coleman: This dangerous standoff must end

Senator Julia Coleman (R–Waconia) urged President Trump, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey to end the standoff between federal, state, and local authorities amid the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Operation Metro Surge in a letter dated Sunday, January 25, 2026. The letter follows the fatal shooting of Minneapolis resident Alex Pretti by federal agents on January 24 and the earlier death of Renee Good on January 7, both occurring during immigration enforcement operations.

“This dangerous standoff must end,” said Sen. Coleman. “With a closely divided legislature I’ve experienced firsthand that people who hold deeply different beliefs can sacrifice, compromise, and work together. So can you. This moment calls for real leadership.”

Sen. Coleman proposed a compromise: President Trump pause street-level immigration enforcement operations, while Governor Walz and Mayor Frey collaborate with the federal government on a negotiated detention policy.
