Friends and neighbors,
Minnesota’s nonpartisan Legislative Auditor has released a report on Gov. Tim Walz that should concern everyone, regardless of politics. The audit found that the Office of Governor Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan mishandled money, payroll, and property over a two-and-a-half-year period. It documented missing receipts, late vendor payments, inaccurate payroll adjustments, and untracked state assets.
In total, the Legislative Auditor listed 12 separate findings of noncompliance. Timesheets were not properly reviewed, reimbursements were sometimes wrong, and documentation was missing for many transactions. Auditors even found that some employees split up credit card purchases to stay under spending limits, a practice that defeats the purpose of those limits entirely.
The auditors said these weaknesses “create the opportunity” for more serious problems. That is a warning that we should all take seriously. The governor’s office is supposed to set the example for good management. When Gov. Walz’s office fails to follow basic financial controls, it undermines the public’s confidence and sets a poor standard for every state agency.
It's easy to dismiss the review as small clerical mistakes, but it points to a larger pattern of poor oversight that Minnesotans have seen across multiple parts of state government. Rules go unenforced. No accountability. No transparency. No protecting taxpayer dollars. And who foots the bill? You and I do.
The governor’s staff says many of the issues have now been fixed. Still, several of the same problems appeared in past audits and were never fully resolved. The public deserves better stewardship than that. Minnesotans expect competence and honesty from their leaders, and that starts with managing taxpayer money carefully. Especially in the governor’s own office.
Sincerely,
