Friends and neighbors,
Since 1979, the University of Minnesota Farm Family Recognition Program has honored farm families from each county for their meaningful contributions to the agricultural industry and their communities. The University of Minnesota recently announced the 2025 Farm Families of the Year recipients, and the families were recognized at the annual Minnesota Farmfest in Redwood County.
In our region, the following family farms are this year’s recipients:
- Sahr Family – Faribault County
- Rognes Family – Freeborn County
- Timm Family – Mower County
- Vang Family – Steele County
- Schlaak Family – Waseca County
Congratulations to the local families honored with this prestigious award! Farm families like these represent generations of dedication to Minnesota agriculture, and we are grateful for their meaningful contributions to our state and the communities they call home.
The work of these families is at the heart of what keeps Minnesota agriculture strong. Our state is known for its agricultural heritage, and it continues to shine as a national leader. Here are a few of the many titles our state currently holds:
- 1st in sugar beets, turkeys raised, and green peas
- 2nd in hogs and sweet corn for processing
- 3rd in soybeans, sunflower, canola, dry beans, and oats
- 4th in corn
- 5th in crop production
- 6th in agricultural production, meat animals, and cheese
These rankings reflect the hard work and dedication of farm families across Minnesota.
I was fortunate to grow up on a dairy farm, where my father taught me the value of hard work. I saw firsthand the long hours, and early mornings required to keep the farm running, and I learned the care and dedication needed for both the land and the animals.
Farming is more than an occupation; it is a way of life built on commitment, resilience, and a deep connection to community. To all the families carrying this tradition forward, keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
Gene
