Nelson statement on guilty verdicts in trial of Sen. Nicole Mitchell

State Senator Carla Nelson (R-Rochester) issued the following statement in response to the guilty verdicts in the felony burglary trial of Sen. Nicole Mitchell (D-Woodbury).

“I’m grateful the jury delivered justice today. They did the right thing. More importantly, I’m relieved for Carol Mitchell, the victim in this case. She waited far too long for closure. Justice delayed is justice denied. This case should have, and could have, been resolved multiple times over the last year. Instead, it was dragged out by Senator Mitchell and Senate Democrats through repeated delays and procedural maneuvers.

"From the beginning, it was clear Senator Mitchell’s actions were serious and disqualifying. The verdict confirms that. Her continued presence in the Minnesota Senate has cast a long shadow over this institution and has undermined the public’s trust in our process.

"Now that the verdict has been delivered, I sincerely hope Senator Mitchell will do the right thing and resign immediately. It is time to turn the page on this troubling chapter.”
