Remembering Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman

By Senator Julia Coleman

Speaker Hortman was the kind of person who could command a room both when she spoke and when she listened. That balance, leading with strength while remaining fully present for others, is rare. But it’s exactly who she was. A steady presence, a thoughtful voice, and someone deeply committed to the people she served.

We worked on opposite sides of the aisle, but I had deep respect for her—not just as a legislator, but as a person. She was principled. She was kind. She was warm, smart, compassionate, and effective. She cared about solving problems and making life better for Minnesotans. Her motivation was always the work, not the spotlight.

She was also so many other things to so many people. A mother, a wife, a friend, a mentor, a dog trainer. Speaker Hortman had layers, and all of them brought something meaningful and good into the world.

I’m devastated by the heartbreaking loss of Speaker Hortman and her husband, Mark. And to Sophie and Colin, I am so deeply sorry for your loss.

Senator Hoffman and his wife Yvette were also targeted in the attack and shot multiple times. I’m grateful they received life-saving care and I’m praying for their continued recovery. As thankful as we all are that they’re alive, it’s impossible to ignore the trauma and pain they’re enduring.

Minnesota is a peaceful home. Violence has no place here. Not in our communities, not in our politics, and not in our rhetoric. The temperature in this country has been rising. We need to cool it down. We can disagree without dehumanizing. We can lead with strength and still treat each other with dignity.

I’m grateful to local, state, and federal law enforcement for bringing in the suspect. This doesn’t erase pain, but it allows us to begin healing. And healing is what Minnesota needs right now.

I’m committed to being part of that process. I hope we all are. Let’s reject hate, reject violence, and reject the idea that outrage is a virtue. Let’s stand together and choose respect, understanding, and peace.

This is a moment for Minnesota. Let’s meet it.
