Friends and neighbors,
By now you have heard the shocking news about House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and Senator John Hoffman and their families. Words can hardly describe how we are feeling today. Needless to say, we are devastated by this unspeakable tragedy.
I served with Melissa Hortman for many years in the House. She was always warm, funny and as friendly as can be, even during stressful times and vigorous debates. I’ve come to know Senator Hoffman well over the last few years serving on the Human Services Committee, and I would describe him the same way. He is dedicated, engaging, has a great sense of humor, and has always been a joy to be around. We will miss Melissa deeply at the Capitol, and look forward to John returning as soon as possible.
Thank you to local law enforcement who reached out to me to make sure Emily and I, and our family, are all right. And thank you to the law enforcement agencies across Minnesota for their fast response and for all their work to keep our communities safe.
My friends, violence is never the answer. We can have vigorous, even intense, debates, but we also need to remember that we are all just people trying to do what we believe is right.
May God Bless Senator Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, Speaker Emerita Hortman, her husband Mark, and their families. Please pray for them.
