Goggin legislative update: Mental Health, MNLARS, and Eagles. Oh my!

Neighbors,

Session is already moving at a chaotic pace. Time is even more compressed this year than last year due to our abbreviated schedule. Committee deadlines are just around the corner, so the pace won’t be slowing down any time soon.

Read on for this weeks’ news, and if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me!

Sincerely,

Mike

Mental health help for Greater MN

Anyone who lives in Greater Minnesota knows the stresses that accompany life as a farmer or in other ag industries, but for a long time there weren’t many options for help.

I am proud to carry Senate File 2555, which will provide money to help with mental health counseling for farm families and business operators. Farmers need to know there are places to turn.

Minnesota also has a relatively new Farm and Rural Helpline specifically dedicated to helping farmers and ag folks who are struggling with stress or depression. The hotline is free, operates 24 hours per day, and is completely confidential. If you or someone you care about could use someone to talk to, please give them a call.

The phone number is 833-600-2670

More accountability for state IT projects

The MNLARS mess has really exposed the need to overhaul Minnesota’s handling of IT projects. This week we introduced a plan to do just that. Under our proposal, every future state IT project would be open for a competitive bid process rather than simply awarded to our state’s IT agency, MN.IT. That way we get to pick the best company for each job, and that company will be fully accountable for their successes and failures.

National Eagle Center visits the Capitol

This week the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minnesota visited the capitol to rally support for their planned expansion, which would include more eagles, exhibits, and educational opportunities. Thank you for having me speak at your event — I’m proud to be the chief author of the bill that will help make the expansion a reality!
